![]() ![]() When did people ever reminisce about using a pedestrian crossing? When has using a pedestrian crossing been an experience worth remembering? You wouldn’t get people down here arguing its merits if it was the pedestrian crossing that was being extinguished! The fact is that crossing the bridge was a special experience. But the bridge, unlike the pelican crossing, is more than just a route across a road. I feel with others that the bridge is the only truly safe route across this extremely busy road. I don’t actually think that the pelican crossing is an acceptable alternative. ![]() The premise of the council is that the bridge is no longer needed because there is an acceptable alternative crossing at ground level. Suffice it to say that I share all those memories of golden days on the beach by the slip. But other people before me have spoken nostalgically of those days. When I was at university in the 50s I remember crossing the slip bridge on many occasions - including exam times when we rather optimistically thought it was possible to revise on the beach. By contrast, this council would like Swansea’s industrial past to be buried and forgotten. I am proud that my home town is now a World Heritage site and has made our industrial past a thing to be celebrated. I grew up among redundant iron works and coal mines which have now been lovingly preserved. I am originally from Blaenavon, a town famous for its industrial heritage. I returned here in 1981 and have lived since then in a street just up the road from this building and very near to the Bridge which is the subject of this inquiry. ![]() I’m Ann Looker and I lived in Swansea for 5 years as a student in the 50s and 60s. Statement to be submitted to inquiry 23rd June 2010 regarding extinguishment of public footpath over Swansea Slip Bridge ![]()
